The Baltimore Basilica-America's First CathedralThe historic Baltimore Cathedral, built from 1806 to 1821, was the first major religious building constructed in America after the adoption of the Constitution. America's first cathedral, offically known as the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, quickly became a symbol of the country's newfound religious freedom. While the Basilica of the Assumption is recognized as one of America's most historic churches, the building's infastructure has largely been ignored over the past half century. The current Basilica restoration will include a total incorporation of modern systems throughout the building, while also restoring the interior to the original design of Benjamin Henry Latrove, under the guidence of Bishop John Carroll.(More Info) |
